Description:
Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay is located on 6 hectares of prime waterfront land by Marina Bay. It is Singapore’s leading cultural entertainment and performing arts centre and is designed to meet the needs of a full-scale musical play.
Car parking facilities at the Esplanade comprises 2-levels of basement carpark with a total of 890 carpark lots accessed by a total of four vehicular ramps and five access stairs.
Project Highlights:
Basement Carpark Structures Designed the top-down construction methodology to facilitate construction. As the major portion of the underground carpark is located beneath Esplanade Drive (formerly part of the Nicoll Highway), the basement foundations and structures were constructed together with the Nicoll Highway Extension project.

Roof Structures Alternative design to facilitate the construction: Redesigned composite roof trusses 4.0m deep and spanning up to 40.0m for supporting the space frame and equipment floors above the ceiling. These supporting floors were constructed of precast planks with in-situ topping. Instead of conventional cast-in-situ, precast shell with in-situ concrete were designed for constructing the link gutter. For easy installation, 3 shells were used per span. Designed the bearing pad assembly for the upper roof structures to meet acoustical requirements for the performance halls below.
Awards:
Singapore Structural Steel Society 20th Anniversary Steel Design Award, Merit Award for Creative and Innovative Use of Steel. FIABCI Prix d’Excellence Awards, 2004 – First in Specialized Category |
